The Continents (2012)
oil stick, pastel, chalk, pencil and acrylic on paper, 30” x 22” each, 2012
Matthew Fontaine Maury was, in the 1850s, the first person to document the wind and wave patterns of the oceans, significantly altering maritime travel. He created a series of hand-drawn maps as part of his research and evidence of his findings. These beautiful maps inspired this series of mixed-media drawings titled, “The Continents.” I invited the poet Standard Schaefer to create a literary text responding to this work. We exchanged the artwork and text back and forth as we created the final manuscript and exhibition pieces. A chapbook is forthcoming.
